Ever wondered what management looks for when deciding which employees should be promoted?

As experienced recruiters we know what our clients are always on the look-out for when it comes to hiring new people and promoting those internally. Most top employees have several traits in common that help them not only to stand out from their peers but to succeed long-term in their chosen careers.

Successful individuals who’re on the fast track for promotion have the following in common, they’re:

1. Collaborative

In today’s connected world we’re all expected to collaborate and this is especially true when it comes to the nature of project based work where individuals and departments are expected to work with one another towards a common goal. Individuals who pull their weight and contribute are sought-after team players and will definitely catch the eye of their employers.

2. Proactive

Every employer wants someone who doesn’t need – or expect – to have their hand held all the time. They are especially attracted to individuals who are constantly looking for ways to improve and add value and who take the opportunities that are presented to them. In a competitive marketplace, companies that take chances and find proactive ways of getting ahead, succeed.

3. Optimistic

Nobody likes a moaner and so individuals who choose to see the “glass half full” are who employers like to keep around. Optimists who have a good dash of realism find ways to see challenges rather than problems and seek out solutions.

4. Self-Directing

Employers, especially those who run smaller businesses, are hands-on and don’t have time to babysit. They are therefore especially drawn to employees who have self-discipline and are autonomous. Self-directing individuals have a clear understanding of what is expected from them, what the rules are and then work hard to manage their time and efforts to produce the goods.

5. Focused on Delivery

Have you ever seen someone who hasn’t achieved their KPAs promoted? Not usually. Individuals who have proven their worth by consistent, quality delivery of work are always frontrunners for the promotion. By taking care to not only ensure that they meet – and often exceed – their own personal KPAs, promotable individuals are those that go the extra mile to find ways to improve customer experience, reduce costs or improve efficiency.
